If you’re craving authentic Chinese cuisine in the western suburbs of Illinois, Winger Restaurant in Westmont is a gem that delivers both nostalgic charm and mouthwatering dishes. This cozy Chinese restaurant, located at 6551 S Cass Ave, welcomes diners into an interior that feels like stepping back in time—think classic 70s or 80s décor that adds character and a warm, inviting atmosphere.

Winger’s menu is a journey through the rich tapestry of Chinese flavors, with standout highlights from its extensive offerings that promise to satisfy diverse palates. Among the crowd-pleasers are their expertly crafted chicken lunch specials, such as the vibrant Chicken With Tomato and Green Onion and the rich, savory Chicken Almond Ding. The broth-infused Chicken Kow is another comforting choice that leaves a fragrant impression long after the last bite.

The restaurant also boasts a remarkable selection of Szechuan and Hunan dishes known for their bold and fiery profiles. Dishes like Mongolian Beef and the spicy yet balanced Kung Pao Shrimp showcase the kitchen’s skill in layering heat, sweetness, and savoriness. The Ma Po Tofu provides a classic, rich and numbing sensation, perfect for those seeking authentic regional flavors with a kick.

Fans of Cantonese-style noodles will find solace in dishes like Beef with Rice Noodle and Shrimp and Chicken Lo Mein, where delicate noodles are expertly tossed with fresh ingredients, creating a symphony of textures and aromas that evoke the bustling street food stalls of southern China.

What many diners appreciate beyond the food here is the feeling of genuine authenticity. Customers rave about the lightning-fast service and the no-frills atmosphere that lets the dishes shine. Francis Raymundo highlights the “crispy, salty, spicy” Japanese fried tofu, a testament to the kitchen’s deft hand with textures and seasoning. Richard Warren acknowledges the rare treat of prawn crackers served with their shrimp dish—a delightful nod to classic British Chinese dining customs—while praising the attentive, warm service.

Despite its modest size and retro ambiance, Winger packs a flavorful punch. The food is less oily but generous with every serving, appealing to both health-conscious and indulgent appetites. Whether you’re a local or venturing into Westmont for the first time, this restaurant promises a satisfying experience reminiscent of the best Chinese eateries found in LA or even Asia itself—a complement S G couldn’t ignore after a skeptical start.

From perfectly executed chow mein to fragrant Hunan specialties, each plate at Winger is crafted to offer a complex yet approachable taste of China. The interior of this spot looks like it's been preserved since the 70s maybe 80s, but that aside the food is the best I've found so far in the western suburbs. On our recent visit, we tried the Japanese fried tofu which was crispy, salty, spicy on the outside, and piping hot on the inside. Bangin'. Also did an order of clams in black bean sauce. Solid, but preference would be some sort of white fish (there's always next time). Beef chow fun was pretty good. Lastly, the green string beans were perfection. From the exterior, this place isn't much to look at, but the food and service were great. I see many more visits in the near future and possible an upgrade to 5 stars as I get more acquainted with the food. 'Til next time, cheers!

A Chinese friend took her family here recently and recommended we visit. The food was delicious and I was absolutely delighted to see the shrimp dish we ordered came with Prawn Crackers (Shrimp Chips) which are served as standard in British Chinese restaurants but never in the US. Both the main courses and appetizers were lovely. The service was fantastic, attentive, and they worked very hard to make sure we had everything we needed. You really can't ask for more. Many Thanks.

Foods are good as told by friend. They are also less oily, tasty and generous. The place is small but the service was fast. Salt and spicy Japanese Tofu was the best. Chinese spinach and garlic, Singapore curry flat rice noodle were good. Actually we asked for Char Kway Teow, not curry.

I was skeptical of the reviews for this restaurant on Yelp, but after trying it out, I am a believer! They said that the food here is comparable to the Chinese restaurants found in LA and Asia, they weren't wrong!! You know this restaurant is an authentic Chinese restaurant when the comes out super fast. Also looking at their food photos, you can see that the noodles and meats have beautiful charred edges, and when tasting the meats or tofu we enjoyed a wonderfully fried dish with crispy shells, welcoming you to enjoy the succulent interior! With these details, you can tell the wok skill of the chef, a real shifu! The salt and spicy Japanese tofu was a really great dish! The tofu was fried extremely well and had crispy exteriors. The combination with green chili and onions gives it multiple layers of flavors, spiciness, sweetness, and saltiness. Excellent dish! The Peking style pork chop has all that one expects of it and is executed to perfection. The flavors were balanced and delicious, and the pork is fried to absolute perfection. Once again, it is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. This highlights the skill of the chef and the adequate fire from the wok! The beef Chow Mien was so good. The thin egg noodles are deep fried first to make it crispy and more it's charred edges! Then the beef with gravy is poured in top to make it softer. Personally I like a mixture of crispy and soft to give it texture. I am so surprised why this place does not have more reviews because it definitely should be a favorite of all who loves great Chinese food, Cantonese cuisine to be exact! This place may not have the best location, but I will make my way out here anytime... The selfish part of me want this place to remain anonymous as if demand goes up, price too :-p But, what the heck, this restaurant is to good to be hidden; they worked and worked on their craft, they deserve attention! Honestly, this restaurant makes food that matches great restaurant in Asia without the atmosphere, presentation and price!

We enjoyed the food here. Beef chow fun, beef with oyster sauce, and salt and pepper squid we're all fantastic. The food came out quickly. Smaller restaurant and old decor, but the good food makes up for it.

One of the best Cantonese chinese restaurant in the western suburbs. Great food, huge quantities and reasonably priced. New & improved with new owners!

Food portions are huge and very delicious. The seafood soup, fish fillet, and fried smelt are highly recommended. We added 2 more dishes, and for the 5 of us, the bill was $85, and there was more than enough to even take home!
